Dr. Nicole Cates, DPM

Dr. Nicole Cates is a fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon with years of training dedicated to foot and ankle pathology. Prior to practicing in San Francisco, Dr. Cates completed her fellowship at the University of Maryland. There she specialized in complex foot and ankle conditions including Charcot neuroarthropathy, pediatric clubfoot, limb lengthening, and complex deformity correction under the direction of a highly regarded faculty of fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeons.

Dr. Cates completed her surgical residency at Georgetown University Hospital, where she had the opportunity to train with renowned surgeons in trauma, reconstructive surgery, arthroscopy, sports medicine, and diabetic limb salvage. She received her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, California and completed her bachelor’s in chemistry at Clemson University.

Dr. Cates is actively involved in research and has several publications in the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery covering surgical outcomes in Charcot reconstruction and diabetic limb salvage, and innovative surgical techniques. She continues to research new methods and advance the field of foot and ankle surgery in areas like diabetic reconstructive surgery, improving the safety of external fixation devices, and diagnostic methods for common deformities. She also lectures at national and local meetings and is an associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Although Dr. Cates is extensively training in foot and ankle surgical reconstruction, she believes it is imperative to exhaust non-surgical treatment options first. She believes in customized care for each patient with the ultimate goal of returning to full activity, and performing daily activities pain-free.

Dr. Thomas G. Sampson, MD

Dr. Thomas G. Sampson trained in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where he currently serves as Medical Director of Hip Arthroscopy at Post Street Surgery Center and Post Street Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, and a Clinical Professor and orthopedic consultant and surgeon at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Fort Miley, San Francisco. He has been in private practice in San Francisco since 1982 and is recognized nationally and internationally as a pioneer and expert in hip preservation and hip arthroscopy.

He developed with his associate James M. Glick numerous advancements in Hip Arthroscopy, most notably the Lateral Approach, Arthroscopic Surgery for FAI, the Use of Extensive Capsulotomy for ideal surgery, and Repair of the FAACD Lesion. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, has written numerous chapters for surgical texts, and has lectured nationally and internationally as an invited speaker.

Dr. Sampson is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the Western Orthopaedic Association (WOA), and the California Orthopaedic Association (COA), the Leroy C. Abbott Orthropedic Society, the Wilson-Bost Interurban Society, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) and as a founding member and past president of the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA).

Dr. Joshua Sampson, MD

Dr. Sampson specializes in non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and pain throughout the body. His goal is to avoid surgery and get patients back to activity as soon as possible. During an appointment, he will discuss the cause of a patient’s pain or injury, along with all treatment options available.

Dr. Sampson has extensive training in the use of ultrasound for in-office diagnosis as well as for guided injections. He has training in the use of ortho biologics as an option for treatment. He performs ultrasound-guided micro-invasive tendon/fascia debridement (Tenex). He also performs injections of the lumbar spine under fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance.

Dr. Joshua Sampson is a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician and a board-certified family physician who treats athletes and active people of all ages. He has treated everyone from recreational to professional athletes. He has covered high profile teams and events including the University of Utah Utes (Division I Football), The Utah Jazz (NBA), The Tour of Utah (Professional Cycling), World Cup speed skating, Olympic bobsledding, Nitro Circus World Games (Motocross), and the South Jordan Marathon. He spent a winter season covering the Snowbird ski clinic, a premier skiing destination in Utah. His training has additionally included a year of general surgery in a high volume trauma center in downtown Detroit as well as a year of research in sports medicine at Stanford.

Dr. Sampson specializes in the care of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, injury prevention, fracture management, fluoroscopic procedures, and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He specializes in non-operative treatment of the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, foot, and low back.
