What is vascular disease?

Vascular disease is any abnormality that occurs in the vascular system of the human body. The vascular system, also known as the circulatory system is the vast network of veins and arteries in our body that carries around blood to and away from the heart.

Vascular disease can come in many forms. Some of the most common vascular diseases include Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), Atherosclerosis, Raynaud’s Disease, Aneurysm, Buerger’s Disease, Blood Clotting Disorders, and many more. All these affect your veins and arteries in different ways.

Commonality of Vascular Disease

Vascular diseases are common among men and women all over the world, especially among older people. In fact, around 8.5 million people in the U.S alone suffer from Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), which affects arteries that carry blood to the legs and arms, while a whopping 78 million suffer from high blood pressure. Often, vascular diseases are found in areas of the vascular system where there is turbulent blood flow. For instance, a common cause is when the direction of blood flow in the arteries changes abruptly. It has been established that the coronary arteries, renal arteries, arch branches, femoral arteries and iliac arteries are often the most common sites of blood flow turbulence, and hence, most likely to be affected.
